Electronic fags could be toxic

Source: The Australian (au)
Date: September 19, 2008

THE World Health Organisation warned today that "electronic cigarettes", which claim to be a nicotine replacement therapy, could be highly poisonous.

"It's 100 per cent false to affirm this is a therapy for smokers to quit," WHO anti-tobacco official Douglas Bettcher said.

"There are a number of chemical additives in the product which could be very toxic."

Electronic cigarettes are usually made of stainless steel and have a chamber for storing liquid nicotine in various concentrations. Users puff on them as they would a real cigarette but do not light them - rather the cigarettes produce a fine, heated mist which is absorbed into the lungs.

The WHO is particularly aggrieved that some manufacturers have implied the organisation views it as a legitimate nicotine replacement therapy, like nicotine gum, lozenges and patches.

"Manufacturers of this electronic cigarette around the world have included WHO's name or logo, for example on their website, on package inserts or on advertisements," Mr Bettcher said.

Keys is due to perform on Tuesday the 31st of July in Jakarta, Indonesia and posters were put up around the city to promote her 'As I Am' concert.

Campaigning organisation Tobacco Free Kids say the adverts for the concert act as a billboard for tobacco firm Philip Morris International and its Indonesian subsidary, Sampoerna.

After this information came to light, Alicia Keys insisted action had been taken to remove the adverts.

She said, "When I was informed that my July 31st As I Am concert in Jakarta, Indonesia was partly sponsored by a tobacco company, I immediately asked for an investigation and that corrective actions be taken."

"As a result, the tobacco company has respectfully withdrawn their sponsorship and all billboards, signage and other forms of advertising will be immediately removed."

"Healthy" Hookah Claims Go Up in Smoke

Source: Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) (au)
Date: June 24, 2008
Author: Karl S. Kruszelnicki

Smoking tobacco is not good for you. But some smokers try an exotic form of smoking in the belief that it will reduce the harmful effects. Dr Karl says it's a pipe dream.

One legend claims that the hookah was invented by the physician, Hakim Abul Fath for the Indian Emperor Akbar (who ruled between
1556 and 1605). This was so that tobacco "smoke should be first passed through a small receptacle of water so that it would be rendered harmless".

So even back then, it was wrongly believed that filtering tobacco smoke through water made it "safe".

Bidis Harm Most Among All Tobacco Products: Study

Bidi smoking is probably killing more people and causing more disease than any other tobacco product in India, the first comprehensive report on the health impact of bidis has indicated.

A typical bidi has less tobacco than a cigarette, but contains higher levels of tar, nicotine, carbon monoxide, carcinogenic hydrocarbons and other toxic substances, according to the report released by the health ministry today.

The material used in the wrapping of bidi tobacco is less porous and less combustible than cigarette wrapping paper. This could lead to a higher intake of carbon monoxide, nicotine and tar during bidi smoking, one study in the report said.
