Quit Smoking Support Program
Step 3: Becoming an Ex

Jumping for Joy
Welcome to step 3 of the quit smoking support program. Your quit date has arrived and it's time to become an ex-smoker today! Here are some tips for getting through your stop day. Don't worry about tomorrow, next month or next year. Just take it one urge at a time, one day at a time. I've found many people get overwhelmed at the thought of not being able to have their "friend" around for the rest of their life. Don't worry about that now. It's a process of learning a new way to live without cigarettes.

Are you experiencing withdrawal symptoms? Here are some tips on coping with quit smoking symptoms.

This is a great time to enlist some helpers to support you in your efforts to quit smoking. A strong support system is shown to improve quitting rates so don't skip this step.

There are several tools that can be useful in the beginning as you learn to become an ex-smoker. You've spent a lot of time practicing smoking. Tools like journaling can help you find new ways to cope with uncomfortable feelings that stress, quitting smoking, and nicotine withdrawal can cause. Deep breathing is such an important tool in this quit smoking support program that it deserves a page all on its' own. Be sure to do this exercise at least twice a day. Some people also find it helpful to do this exercise on a schedule like on the hour, or take a deep breath every time they walk through a door. Find what works for you but don't underestimate the power of the breath! In addition to deep breathing, there are several other relaxation techniques that can be tools to help you manage stress.

Some ex-smokers experience a lapse during their quit attempt. While a mistake may or may not happen, it's important to know what to do if you do experience a quit smoking lapse. Just don't give up on your quit attempt! View a lapse as a slip, rather than a failure. What's important is that you get back on track with the quit smoking support program as quickly as possible.

Now it's time to move on to the final step, step 4. Don't worry if you need to go back through a step. You'll learn something new each time!
